List of Common Orthodontic Problems

There are many common orthodontic problems (dental malocclusions) that can be corrected with Invisalign and Dr. Bruno Paliani. Here is a list of some of the most common orthodontic problems:

SPACING - Gaps | Spaces | Spacing | Diastemas | Gap Teeth

Spaces between teeth are referred to diastemas or gaps between teeth. These spaces can occur if the teeth are proportionately less wide than ideal making them appear thinner. These spaces can make these areas appear darker. A wide dental arch, smaller teeth and missing teeth are other reasons for spaces occurring. When teeth are not contacting properly, the gum tissue between them can recess and cause what is referred to as a ‘Black Triangle”

CROWDING - Crowded | Crooked | Crooked Teeth | Crowded Teeth | Crowding

Crowding can occur for several reasons. Typically, the amount of space to line up the teeth as they erupt in the mouth is insufficient so the teeth begin to go crooked and are crowded out of the proper arch alignment. We can create more space by changing the shape of the jaws, pushing the teeth outwards and uprighting the teeth towards the back to allow more room for the teeth in the front to align themselves.

CROSSBITES - Cross Bites

Crossbites typically occur when the tooth an upper tooth erupting erupts in behind the lower teeth or when an lower tooth erupts out in front of the upper teeth. These crossbites can happen with the front teeth (anterior crossbite) or the back part of the mouth (posterior crossbite).

OVERBITES - Over Bites | Deep Bite

When the upper front teeth excessively cover over the lower teeth and/or when the lower teeth significantly erupt in behind the upper front teeth, this is referred to as a deep bite or overbite. This situation can lead to a gummy smile of the front teeth. It can also lead to premature wear of the upper and lower front teeth.

OVERJET - Over Jet | Teeth Sticking Out

When the upper front teeth stick out excessively, or when the upper front teeth are more pronounced and out in front of the lower front teeth, this is called an overjet. When the lower teeth and or jaw are recessed, this leads to an overjet situation as well.

UNDERBITES - Under Bites

If you have a more prominent lower jaw or many teeth in the lower arch that are situated toward the front of the mouth, this can force the teeth on the lower arch to sit out in front of the teeth in the upper arch. This is called a underbite.

OPEN BITES - openbites

In an open bite, there is a space between the upper and lower front teeth when the back teeth are closed together and contacting. There are many reasons that can cause an open bite: history of prolonged thumb or finger sucking, tongue thrusting, trauma, over-eruption of back teeth, abnormal jaw growth, etc. This situation can make tearing into foods very difficult and can also cause speech problems like a frontal lisp.

IMPACTED CANINES

Permanent canine teeth or ‘eye’ teeth can become completed impacted, partially impacted or completely crowded on the inside or outside portion of the mouth. There are several reasons this may occur. There may be a lack of space for the new ‘eye’ teeth, baby ‘eye’ teeth are still remaining, or permanent canines can be deviated or pointing to one side or another and not having enough room to erupt into proper arch alignment.
